Install – Photocell/Switch

We regularly will install Photocells (often referred to as dusk to dawn sensors) rather than timers on our lighted signs. A photocell sensor is an electronic device that automatically controls the amount of electric current in a circuit based on the amount of light it detects. This will turn the sign on at night or a cloudy day, and off during the day when the sun is out.

The photocell has 3 wires coming out, Black, white and red. Black connects to the black wire coming from the source (pole or building). Red connects to the black wire of your load (sign or light). White connects to the white wire coming from both the source (pole or building) and the load (sign or light).

Switches

Switches are similar to photocells but instead of 3 wires coming out,it only has 2 Black wires. These first wire will connect to the black wire coming from the source (pole or building) and the other wire connects to the black wire of your load (sign or light). And that’s it, check to make sure it turns on and off the sign.
