Install – Using Nuts/Wire Cutters Correctly
Using Wire Nuts/Wire Cutters Correctly
Connecting a sign to electric or wiring within a sign requires quality connections to make sure the sign stays connected to power. If wires don’t stay connected, wires can pull out or bare wire can touch the metal frame and short out. Both issues will cause the sign not to light and will cause a call back for us to return and fix the issue.
To properly install a wire nut, you can follow these steps:
1. Before working with wire nuts, turn off the power to the circuit or remove the fuse.
2. Select the correct wire nut: Check the package for a connection chart that indicates the number and size of wires that can be spliced together with each wire nut.
3. Strip the insulation: Use a stripper to remove about half an inch of insulation from each wire.
4. Align the wires: Hold the stripped ends of the wires together so they are parallel and even.
5. Insert the wires: Put the wires into the wire nut, holding them firmly so they don’t slip.
6. Twist the wire nut: Turn the wire nut clockwise until it’s secure and there’s no bare wire showing. You can use a pair of pliers for a final twist.
7. Test the connection: Gently tug on each wire to make sure it’s secure. If there’s any movement, start over.
Here are some additional tips for using wire nuts:
• When joining solid and stranded wires, twist the strands together first, make sure there are no lone strands sticking out, then place them next to the solid wire.
• Wrap with electrical tape: For added protection, you can wrap the wire nuts and wires with electrical tape to keep moisture out and minimize movement.
