Wood Skids

Sometimes a temporary sign needs to go up for a public notice sign or a coming soon sign for a construction site, etc. In these cases it may not make sense to dig holes and concrete in permanently, so we make what is called a skid.

What you will need to purchase:

  • (4) 4″ wood lag screws
  • (3) 4×4×8 treated posts
  • (handful) 3” wood screws
  • (handful) 1” wood screws
  • (1) 2x4x8
  • (4) 70lb Tube Sand Bags

Step1:
Once you have the necessary items purchased, using 2 of the 4x4x8 boards notch out one end of each post as pictured below. The notch needs to be the height of the full width of the 4×4 (Approx 3.75”) and half the depth (Approx 1.875”). See Below

Step 2:
Take your remaining 4x4x8 post and cut in half so you have (2) 4x4x4 posts. Measure and mark center of one side. Notch out an area the full width of the 4×4 post, and half the depth in the center of the 4×4 post. See Below:

Step 3:
The notches you have made on each of the posts will interlock. Test fit these and predrill (2) holes diagonally for your lag screws at the joints. Get your 2x4x8 board and cut it in half so you have (2) 2x4x4. Using your 3” wood screws, attach the 2x4x4 diagonally, connecting the vertical 4x4x8 to the horizontal 4x4x4 as a support. See Below:

Step 4:
Now that you have 2 sets of upright legs assembled, attach your legs to each side end of the plywood using some more 3” wood screws. Standard orientation is vertical, though in some cases the customer may want a horizontal install. In the case of a horizontal install bring your legs in 12” from the end of the plywood. See Below:

Step 5:

Attach your sign face onto the plywood using 1” wood screws. Sign face may be made of corroplast or ACM.

Step 6:
Be sure to install on level ground at location. Place (4) 70lb tube sand bags (1) on each corner of the legs to help with wind resistance. Be sure to take pictures of finished install and email to info@highwaymansigns.com so we can send to the customer as proof of install.
